The design for this house was tailored to the original site’s unique vantage point – it sits on a “mount,” overlooking the tidal marshes. Rather than confront a visitor with massive entry steps to reach the required flood plane level, entry is accessed from the side where the topography is more gently sloped and communicates a more casual aesthetic, indicative of low country living. Similar to a “Charleston Single Style” house, all the public rooms, as well as the master bedroom, open onto a “piazza,” or porch for breezes and views. The aesthetics of the design were derived from historic St. Augustine architecture.
